phelonion
E
Extract
Eastern equivalent of the Western chasuble and cope. The phelonion was originally the vestment of both priests and bishops, but in recent times the bishops have replaced it with the sakkos. On the Holy Mountain it is still the custom for bishops, when not celebrating solemnly, to do so vested in the phelonion and little omophorion. This is also usual when a bishop celebrates the Liturgy of St James. The phelonion is worn, together with epitrachelion , at the Divine Liturgy, at Great Vespers and parts of festal orthros , as well as at the celebration of the mysteries . The Russian phelon often has a row of buttons across the chest so that the front of the vestment can be raised or lowered. See also religious dress . ... log in or subscribe to read full text
