(1874–1922) Russian new martyr . From the northern province of Olenets, Veniamin was consecrated bishop of Gdov in 1910. He worked throughout the St Petersburg region, reviving parish life, founding schools and preaching. Elected metropolitan of Petrograd during the 1917 Revolution, Veniamin fearlessly opposed arrest and execution of clergy and church activists. Arrested in 1922 for non-cooperation with the Soviet authorities’ campaign to expropriate church valuables, he stood trial with eighty-six priests and was executed with Archimandrite Sergeii and Professors N.
