The Blackwell Dictionary of Eastern Christianity contains nearly seven hundred articles written by an international team of fifty contributors, many of whom are the leading authorities in their fields. It is a book for scholars and students, but equally and importantly it is a book for Eastern Christians and for anyone interested in learning more about Eastern Christianity. The Dictionary is about some of the major living traditions of Christianity and some which are very little known. Its articles cover Eastern Orthodox, Eastern Catholic, Oriental and Oriental Orthodox churches, and Eastern churches whose roots lie partly in the Reformation, as well as dissident Eastern churches and sects. The Dictionary presents the Eastern traditions of Christianity in terms Eastern Christians will recognize and can own, not simply in terms of Western Christian interests and a Western view of Christian history. The Christian East is not a variant or a derivative of the Christian West. The articles in the Dictionary are written by historians, theologians, scholars of liturgy and iconography, art historians, linguists, philosophers, patrologists, and musicians. They represent many different approaches to the study of Eastern Christianity. No attempt has been made in this Dictionary to impose uniformity on the work of the contributors.
