Zographou martyrs

Troops sent by Michael VIII Palaiologos (1260–81) to eliminate opposition on athos to union with rome incarcerated Abbot Thomas and twenty- five monks and laymen in a tower of the Zographou monastery and burnt them to death in 1282. Commemorated on 10 October these martyrs are particularly revered in Bulgaria, Zographou being a Bulgarian monastery, but also in Greece where girls are named Zographia in their honour.
