Greek, ordination: literally, voting by raising the hand, therefore, by extension, election or appointment to office. In Christian use, cheirotonia designates sacramental ordination in which a person is made deacon , priest or bishop by episcopal laying-on of hands. It is contrasted with cheirothesia , though the technical distinction emerged over time.
