‘Country bishop’: ancient term for the cleric overseeing rural areas outside a town. Canon XIII of Ancyra (314) forbade chorepiscopi to ordain priests or deacons except with written permission from the bishop. A similar prohibition in Canon X of the Dedication Synod of Antioch (341) makes it clear that the local city bishop has jurisdiction over a chorepiscopus.
