(1867–1922) Chrysostomos Kalaphatis. A modern new martyr or ethnomartyr from Triglia on the Propontis shores of Bithvnia. Chrysostom was sent to macedonia in 1902 by the ecumenical patriarchate . As metropolitan of Drama and Pyrsopolis, he opposed the expansion of the Bulgarian exarchate and championed the cause of reform within the ottoman empire. His political stance led the Ottoman authorities to have him recalled to Istanbul in 1907, but they later sanctioned his transferral to Smyrna in 1910. Chrysostom angered the regime again by working to help Christian refugees made homeless by the turmoil in asia minor caused by the Balkan wars and the onset of the First World War. Condemned to internal exile, he returned to Smyrna to welcome the Greek troops in 1919. When the Turkish army retook Smyrna, Chrysostom was handed over to a mob and lynched as a collaborator. He had refused to leave his flock when he could, or to support the Kemalist cause. Chrysostom is commemorated on 10 September.
