The League of Arab States (its official name) was established in 1945 as an association of Arab countries seeking cooperation in defending one another from outside forces and supporting the region's economic and social goals. Arab League membership includes Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
