The validation of a qualifying test administered to applicants for positions as police officers is the subject of this case. Test 21 was designed to test verbal ability, such as vocabulary, reading, and comprehension. In considering the validity of this test, the court considered whether the test was directly related to satisfactory progress in the police training program. The court held that it is permissible for the department to use a test for the purpose of predicting ability to master a training program, even if the test does not otherwise predict ability to perform on the job. ... log in or subscribe to read full text
