German demythologizing existentialist theologian, born in Wiefelstede, Professor at University of Marburg. Bultmann drew on Heidegger's ontology to develop a theology suitable for modernity. He sought to demythologize the scriptures by translating biblical language into terms of human fallenness and God's call to authentic existence.
