British philosopher of language and philosopher of mind, born in London, taught at University of Oxford. Evans's subtle discussion of questions of reference and intentionality focused on the conditions under which a thought can be about an object. His own views often sought to reconcile aspects of major rival approaches to issues of thought, reference, and meaning.
