American epistemologist and philosopher of mind and action, born in Brooklyn, New York, Professor of Philosophy, University of Arizona, and Rutgers University. Goldman responded to the Gettier problem by requiring causal links between beliefs and the facts known for justified true beliefs to constitute knowledge. His causal theory of action accounts for intentional action in terms of causal relations between mental states and behavior. He has argued more generally for the importance of cognitive psychology for epistemology. His main works include A Theory of Human Action (1970), Epistemology and Cognition (1986), and Liaisons: Philosophy Meets the Cognitive and Social Sciences (1992). ... log in or subscribe to read full text
