Rebecca G. Adams is Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her publications include: Deadhead Social Science (2000), Placing Friendship in Context (1998), Adult Friendship (1992), and Older Adult Friendship: Structure and Process (1989). A Past President of the Southern Sociological Society and Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, she serves as Editor of Personal Relationships and as a Member-at-Large of the Council of the American Sociological Association. Syed Farid Alatas is an Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore specializing in sociological theory and historical sociology. His publications include Alternative Discourse in Asian Social Science: Responses to Eurocentrism (2006) and Democracy and Authoritarianism in Indonesia and Malaysia: The Rise of the Post-Colonial State (1997). Graham Allan is Professor of Sociology at the University of Keele, UK, and Visiting Professor in Family Studies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.
