Decades ago, the late Jim Laue nurtured my fascination with conflict and a love of justice. His encouragement shaped my career, and set the stage for this handbook. Trish Jones, a dear friend and colleague, encouraged me to build what is now chapter 2 of this volume into this handbook. Nancy Hollett, Jerry Gale (my co-authors for the second chapter), and I deliberated for so many hours as we explored the meaning of each measure we could find relating to mediation effectiveness, what a model or organizing theme might look like, and ultimately where a measure might fit into the model we offer in this handbook. The effort was fun and very much in the spirit of creating clarity that might start conversations. Finally, there are so many visionaries and caring activists in the field of negotiation and, more specifically, in mediation. Like Jim, many sustain us through shared values and their wisdom.
