fine Restoration house in Thornton, owned by the Firth family. It and the attached farm had 23 acres of land “in a high state of cultivation” ( Leeds Intelligencer , 30 Oct 1823), and fine gardens between the house and the river. The growing young Brontë family were entertained here by the Firths often during their Thornton years, and for this reason Patrick’s later visit there, after Elizabeth Firth’s marriage, was a melancholy one – he “could not feel comfortable, and I s[oo]n departed, intending, never to call again” (to Elizabeth Franks, 28 Apr 1831).
