Charlotte and Anne spent a day there during their week-long 1836 stay with Mrs Franks, and Charlotte paid a longer visit in January 1839 – “O dear! I wish the visit were well over” she wrote to Ellen Nussey (20 Jan 1839). The Old Hall, home of the Walkers, was sixteenth century, with Georgian additions. The Leeds Intelligencer , advertising it for letting in 1846, mentioned “Lofty bed rooms, water closets . . . and excellent cellars” (30 May 1846).
