Maurice, Frederick Denison John (1805–72):
Extract
theologian of Unitarian upbringing, later converting to the Church of England. He was a pioneer Christian Socialist, proponent of higher education for women and of adult education generally. Charlotte found him the “most in earnest” of those preachers she heard in London in 1851, and said if she had the choice “it is Maurice whose ministry I should frequent” (to James Taylor, 15 Nov 1851). When, following the publication of his Theological Essays , he lost his professorship of theology at King’s College, London, Charlotte protested strongly in a letter to Mrs Gaskell at his ousting (see Marion J.
