Paxton, Sir Joseph (1801–65):
Extract
superintendent of the gardens at Chatsworth, the Derbyshire home of the Dukes of Devonshire, and architect of the Crystal Palace, described by Charlotte as “the Magician Paxton” (to L. Wheelwright, 12 Jan 1851). Patrick wrote to him in 1858 in some embarrassment after Haworth people had gone behind his back and approached the Duke of Devonshire for a contribution to new heating for the church and Sunday schools: “fifty pounds remain as a debt, but this may – and ought to be rais’d by the Inhabitants,” he wrote sternly (16 Jan 1858).
