well-meaning but ineffectual anti-war organization which invited Charlotte to “appear on the platform” of their meeting at Exeter Hall on 30 October 1849 (to WSW, 1 Nov 1849). Charlotte was understandably bemused as to the reason (apart from indiscriminate toadyism) behind the invitation.
