governess and companion to Shirley Keeldar, who turns out to be the mother of Caroline Helstone. She is a stately, conventional, conservative lady, who yet turns out to be very unsure of herself in emergencies, being unable to trust her own judgment. Perhaps this is just as well, as she gave away Caroline as a baby fearing that her prettiness was a sign of perversity. She had been a governess (her maiden name, oddly, was Agnes Grey) who fell in love with the handsome but dissolute James Helstone. After further unhappy experiences as governess with the Hardmans she is comparatively happy and at peace with Shirley.
