prestigious French journal which reviewed Jane Eyre and Shirley in 1848 and 1849, reviews which delighted Charlotte, though the first came at one of the darkest periods of her life. She wrote to W. S. Williams: “The Notice in the ‘Revue des deux Mondes’ is one of the most able – the most acceptable to the author of any that has yet appeared” (16 Nov 1848). The reviewer was Eugène Forçade. The Revue was at that date nearly 20 years old, and had established a reputation for dealing with both political and literary matters with authority and imagination.
