M. Paul’s godchild and ward in Villette . She is introduced somewhat misleadingly in ch. 31 (Lucy feels a “disagreeable anticipatory sensation” at the sight of her), but only enters the drama later, during the carnival chapter, where Lucy sees a girl, beautiful, “well-nourished, fair, and fat of flesh” (ch. 39) whom she fears M.
