Extract
landlord of the Black Bull (referred to as the “Devil’s Thumb” in a Branwell letter of 13 Mar 1840) who suffered from melancholia and alcoholism, and died in March 1848. His mental trouble, which may have been connected to the Beaver forgery trial, was described by Patrick as a “very severe and great affliction” in a letter of 29 February 1844 to George Taylor, whom he asked to throw a tea party to divert Thomas’s mind.
