Caunt, Benjamin (1815–61):
Extract
celebrated prize-fighter, son of a servant of Lord Byron, a noted aficionado of the sport, at Newstead Abbey. He won the Boxing Championship from Bendigo in 1838, but lost a return match on 9 September 1845. The day after this contest Branwell sent a sketch of the contest to J. B. Leyland. Bendigo was awarded this contest in the 93rd round, giving point to F. Leyland’s comment about prize-fighting in general, that the two fighters “pounded each other till they were unlike anything human” (v. 1, p. 117).
