Extract
the blind Rochester’s refuge after the fire at Thornfield. It is described as “retired and hidden” in an unhealthy situation ( Jane Eyre , v. 3, ch. 1) and as an old building but a manor house of “no architectural pretensions” (v. 3, ch. 11).
