real name Johann Heinrich Füssli or Fuessli, which is the form preferred by Juliet Barker. Swiss-born artist and former clergyman, who was encouraged in his artistic aspirations by Reynolds, and learnt his technique, like the Brontës, by copying other people’s pictures – in his case by going to Italy and copying Michelangelo’s “Last Judgment.” His paintings were grand, often horrific or phantasmagoric. One of Charlotte’s notable pictures is “Lycidas,” a version of Fuseli’s “Solitude at Dawn,” one of his illustrations of Milton. ... log in or subscribe to read full text
