one of the “four little girls – all more or less pretty and intelligent” who, “scattered through the rooms of a somewhat spacious house – seem to fill it with liveliness and gaiety” (letter to Mrs Smith, 1 July 1851) in Charlotte’s account of her visit to the Gaskells in 1851.
