Extract
the youngest Gaskell daughter, who stole Charlotte’s heart on her visit to Manchester and is often mentioned with something like awe in the letters. She is “that dear but dangerous little person” (to ECG, 6 Aug 1851) and “that small sprite” (to ECG, 20 Sep 1851). More seriously she said that “I think hers a fine little nature – frank and of genuine promise” (to ECG, 9 July 1853).
