Extract
the eldest Gaskell daughter. In spite of Charlotte’s reference to “four little girls” in the Gaskell house during her visit in 1851, Marianne was in fact away at school at the time. Since Marianne did not make herself known when they both attended one of Thackeray’s lectures, Charlotte probably met her during her April 1853 visit to Plymouth Grove, because later in that year she refers to Marianne and Meta as “dear, happy girls” (to ECG, 9 July 1853). ... log in or subscribe to read full text
