as Regent he makes a brief appearance in Branwell’s “History of the Young Men,” and in Shirley he is described as “an unprincipled debauchee” (ch. 4), “the fat ‘Adonis of fifty’” (ch. 23) and “the royal profligate” (ch. 37). He is one monarch about whom even conservatives and royalists seem happy to be rude.
