chief minister of Louis Philippe at the time of the 1848 revolution – both men being characterized by Charlotte as “men of dishonest hearts” (to WSW, 25 Feb 1848). A conservative Protestant and a distinguished writer with a good record of promoting education, he is the sort of figure that Charlotte in her earlier years would have heartily approved of.
