American essayist, poet, and philosopher. Although his work as a poet and orator has usually eclipsed his importance as a thinker, Emerson was one of the first American philosophers of international stature. He was deeply interested in N ietzsche , who translated some of his writings and often quoted from them. In 1833 Emerson travelled to England, where he met several writers of note, including Words-worth, Coleridge, and Carlyle. In the 1990s he was the controversial focal point of efforts to bridge the gap between Anglo-American and European philosophy and literature, social criticism, and philosophy, for example, in the writings of Stanley C avell , Harold B loom , Richard Poirier, and Irving Howe. ... log in or subscribe to read full text
