British linguist. Since 1979, Fowler has been professor of English and linguistics at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, where he has taught since 1964. Fowler's main influence has been in the field of “critical linguistics,” which he and a group of colleagues pioneered during the 1970s. Critical linguists maintain that neither a T ext nor an analyst can be sociopolitically neutral, but that analysis of the language of any text can reveal its underlying I deology .
