Farga Pellicer was a well-regarded printer who contributed to the development of an independent press in Barcelona. He also played a role in the introduction of the First International and the International Alliance of Socialist Democracy to Catalonia. In 1869 he established contact with Giuseppe Fanelli (d. 1877), close friend and collaborator of Bakunin. The meeting was hosted in Barcelona by Rafael's uncle, the Catalan artist José Luis Pellicer (1842–1901). During the meeting attendants were introduced to the program of the First International and the Alliance. He was then elected secretary of the Centre Federal de las Sociedades Obreras de Barcelona. In 1868 the situation of the Alliance within and in relation to the International was hotly debated, but by early August 1869 Farga Pellicer was a decided supporter of Bakunin. On August 28 he and Gaspar Sentiñón y Cerdaña (1835?–1902) attended a meeting of the Alliance held in Geneva and in early September attended the congress of the First International in Basel. After the congress of the First International, both Farga Pellicer and Gaspar Sentiñon remained in Switzerland and there they were inducted by Bakunin into a newly created, secret revolutionary society. Upon his return he became co-founder of the weekly La Federatión (The Federation), published from 1869 to 1874 and the first anarchist newspaper of Catalonia.
