Peninsula of the northern Adriatic lying between trieste and Rijeka (see fiume ), now divided between croatia and slovenia . Following the collapse of the habsburg empire , the 1919 treaty of st germain transferred sovereignty over this ethnically complex region to Italy. Istria, with its substantial Slavic population, subsequently became a source of tension with yugoslavia . It was eventually taken over by tito's regime at the end of World War II.
