This term covers two regional alliances formed to contest the hegemony of Turkey (see turkey and europe ) in the balkans . The first was created in 1865 by Mikhail Obrenović, prince of serbia , who aimed at combining with greece , romania , and montenegro to liberate the subject Christian peoples of the Ottoman Empire. However, this venture did not survive his assassination three years later. More significant was the second such League which, with Russian encouragement and again under Serbia's leadership, formed in mid-1912.
