Spanish term meaning “leader.” Having been originally applied to nineteenth-century South American revolutionaries using a populist and charismatic appeal to promote reforms, it is now associated particularly with franco who in 1936 declared himself “Caudillo of Spain, by the grace of God.” In this way, he nurtured a cult of hero-worship similar to that fostered in Italy by mussolini (as “Duce”) and in Germany by hitler (as “Führer”). ... log in or subscribe to read full text
