The section supports and encourages the study of all aspects of diplomacy broadly defined, has about 80 members, and generates between 8 and 12 panels per convention. The study of how states and others represent themselves and their interests to one another in regional, international, and world societies provides the primary intellectual focus of the section. The section also has something of an evangelical mission, however, its members seeking: to advance the study of diplomacy; to develop the application of insights generated thereby to the study of international relations more broadly defined; and to encourage the greater involvement of practitioners in the academic project.
