The homeland of this family of I ndian languages was the St Lawrence—Hudson River region. Its major subdivisions are the languages of the M ohawk , O neida , S eneca -C ayuga -O nondaga , T uscarora , H uron (W yandot ), and C herokee I ndians . The Cherokee probably broke off and wandered south to the highlands of N.C., S.C., and Ga. about 3.500 years ago. The Tuscarora probably left the homeland for coastal N.C.-Va. 2,000 years ago.
