(b. Washington, Ky., 2 February 1803; d. Pittsburg Landing, Tenn., 6 April 1862) In 1826 Johnston graduated from West Point with Jefferson D avis . He resigned from the army after duty in the B lack H awk W ar and joined the T exas R evolt , as both brigadier general and secretary of war. He commanded Texans in the M exican W ar , reentered the US Army in 1849, and led US forces in the U tah W ar as brigadier general. He refused a Union command and held CSA lines in Ky.-Tenn. until 1862.
