Lyceums were community organizations that provided facilities for public lectures and other forms of adult education; many accumulated libraries and scientific apparatus. Josiah Holbrook founded the first lyceum at Millbury, Mass., in 1826. Within 15 years, lyceums existed in about 3,500 towns.
