On 5 July 1859, Captain N. C. Brooks of the Gambia discovered the two islands and claimed them for the US. On 28 August 1867, Captain William Reynolds of the USS Lackawanna occupied the atoll for the US. The navy established a way station there, which the Japanese failed to take at the battle of M idway .
