This party was organized to demand fuil political representation for blacks within the state Democratic party. In 1964 it challenged the regular party's credentials at the Democratic national convention and received two seats as special delegates. At the 1968 convention, it allied with liberal whites under the title Loyal Democrats of Mississippi and denied that the regular delegation could fairly represent the state because of pervasive discrimination against black voters. The convention then denied the regular delegation its credentials and seated the Loyal Democrats.
