(b. North Manchester, Ind., 14 March 1854; d. Washington, D.C., 1 June 1925) Formerly Democratic governor of Ind. (1909–13), Marshall was US vice-president (1913–21). He was the first vice-president in nearly a century to serve two consecutive terms in that office. He took over Woodrow W ilson 's ceremonial duties after his stroke, but refused to assume any executive powers.
