This people, speakers of one of the S ahaptin languages , originally occupied the Snake and Grande Ronde valleys of Wash., Oreg., and Idaho. They acquired horses about 1720 and bred herds for trading to other Indians, and later to pioneers on the O regon T rail , and miners. When observed by the L ewis and C lark expedition , they numbered about 3,000 in 60 villages. They split into factions during the 1860s over whether to sell land to the US; they eventually sold large quantities, and most accepted reservation status. They stayed at peace with the US until the 1870s, when the anti-reservation faction fought the N ez P erce campaign .
