The first national park was Yellowstone, created in 1872. The Interior Department managed US parks and monuments until the National Park Service's creation on 25 August 1916. Stephen Mather, its first director, oversaw vigorous growth to 1929. By 1988, its responsibilities had expanded to cover 124,433 square miles, including 49 national parks, 77 national monuments, 112 historic parks or sites, and 104 other areas, including the White House.
