(OAS) This was an outgrowth of the P an A merican U nion and R io P act . On 30 April 1948, at Bogota, Colombia, motivated in large part by anti-Communist sentiments, 21 nations created the OAS as a regional security alliance. In 1954 the OAS condemned Communist activity in the western hemisphere. In 1962 it suspended Communist Cuba's membership and supported the US in the C uban missile crisis ; it imposed sanctions against Cuba for promoting Communist subversion from 1964 to 1975. The OAS endorsed US intervention in the D ominican R epublic in 1965 and in H aiti in 1993, but declined to support US intervention in N icaragua during the 1980s or the US invasion of P anama in 1989. ... log in or subscribe to read full text
