(b. Danville, Ala., 12 September 1913; d. Tucson, Ariz., 31 March 1980) While at Ohio State University (1934–7), Owens became the most prominent American track star, and broke many world records. As an African-American at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Owens shattered Adolph Hitler's hopes of using the games as a propaganda platform for displaying German racial superiority. He not only won four gold medals, but set world records in two events and tied a world record in another. A furious Hitler left the stadium rather than acknowledge his triumphs.
