(b. Bar Harbor, Maine, 8 July 1908; d. New York, N.Y., 26 January 1979) Grandson of John R ockefeller , he served the State Department (1940–51) and was special advisor to Dwight D. E isenhower (1954–5). In 1958 he broke the tradition that divorced politicians could not win high office by becoming N.Y. governor after a remarriage to “Happy” Murphy. He lost the 1964 Republican nomination for president to Barry G oldwater . After 15 years' service as N.Y. governor, he resigned on 18 December 1973 to devote himself full-time to chair commissions studying national problems and water conservation.
