(b. Sharon, Vt., 23 December 1805; d. Carthage, Ill., 27 June 1844) Smith reported that during 1823–7, near Manchester, N.Y., an angel showed him golden plates recording an ancient Hebrew migration to America. He published this Book of Mormon in March 1830, and in April founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or M ormons. His challenge to mainstream Protestantism aroused enormous hostility that drove the Mormons westward. In 1831 he took his followers to Kirtland Mills, Ohio, then to Jackson County, Mo., and in 1839 to Nauvoo, Ill., where local hysteria over Mormon polygyny led to Smith's murder in 1844.
